  1. Welcome to the Demo Version of the IBM DualStor Backup Program
  2. for Windows Version 2.0!
  3.  
  4. All operations of the DualStor for Windows program are enabled with this
  5. Demo version EXCEPT the Restore operation.  You can Select the
  6. Restore operation but after you enter the Restore parameters, you
  7. will receive a message indicating the Restore operation is disabled.
  8. To install this Demo version, insert the DualStor for Windows diskette
  9. in a 3.5" floppy drive and enter 'x:setup' where x=your 3.5" floppy
  10. drive designator (for example, a:setup) from the Windows Program Manager
  11. File pull-down, Run option.
  12. After DualStor for Windows is installed and after you have restarted Windows,
  13. double-click on the DualStor group to open the DualStor group and then
  14. double-click on the DualStor icon to start the DualStor application.
  15. We hope you like DualStor!  If you would like to purchase DualStor for
  16. Windows you can call Options by IBM at 1-800-426-7299 (US Only) or IBM
  17. Direct at 1-800-465-7999 (Canada Only).  DualStor for DOS and DualStor for 
  18. Windows versions 2.0 are packaged together.
  19. You also may be interested in purchasing the DualStor 450 Tape Drive which
  20. can store up to 450 meg of data when using a Sony QIC-wide tape QW5122XL
  21. and level 2 compression (data dependent).

  46.   1 - DUALSTOR EXECUTION

  49. *Undocumented Copy/Paste Capability*
  50.  
  51. In the Session Logs window, the Control menu includes a copy
  52. capability not documented in the User Manual. Select text -- either by
  53. clicking on one or more lines with your mouse or by using the Select
  54. All option -- and then select Copy. The selected text will be copied
  55. to the clipboard and can be pasted into another application that has a
  56. paste command.
  57.  
  58. ----------
  59. *Incremental vs. Differential Backup Methods*
  60.  
  61. The only difference between Incremental and Differential backups
  62. is the Incremental method will reset the archive bits and the
  63. Differential does not reset the archive bits.  Both methods
  64. will back up the same files from your hard disk based on the
  65. archive bit.  Checked files that have the archive bit set on
  66. will be backed up.
  67.  
  68. ----------
  69. *AutoTape Command Prompt*
  70.  
  71. When entering a command in the AutoTape command box, be sure to use
  72. the extension of the file being used so that the operation will work
  73. properly. For example:
  74.  
  75.         DUALSTRW.EXE FULL-CDE.TPF
  76.  
  77. ----------
  78. *~BEX Files*
  79.  
  80. Files that begin with ~BEX are temporary files used by DualStor. If
  81. you see one of these files when DualStor is not running, you can
  82. delete them. ~BEX files will be found either in your TEMP directory or
  83. your DualStor directory.
  84.  
  85. ----------
  86. *Ignoring Drives in DualStor*
  87.  
  88. You can tell DualStor to ignore specified drives, if you have drives
  89. that are creating error messages or speed problems when you run
  90. DualStor. For example, if you have a computer with a single floppy
  91. drive (drive A:), you can have DualStor ignore your non-existent B
  92. drive.  You may also want to use this setting to tell DualStor to ignore
  93. both A: and B: drives so that they do not appear in your DualStor
  94. drives window.  The default Drives selection would then always be your
  95. C: drive.
  96.  
  97. To do this, add the following command to the DUALSTRW section of your
  98. DUALSTRW.INI file (located in your DUALSTOR directory).
  99.  
  100.         IRSKIPDISK=ab
  101.  
  102. You can list as many drive letters as you want, putting no spaces
  103. between them, for example, IRSKIPDISK=abcd (to ignore the A:, B:,
  104. C:, and D: drives).
  105.  
  106. You could add the following statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT instead.
  107.  
  108.         SET IRSKIPDISK=abcd
  109.

  114. *Floppy Drive Access*
  115.  
  116. To access a floppy drive while DualStor is running in the background,
  117. do so from within Windows, using either the File Manager or the "Run"
  118. command on the Program Manager's File menu. You will not be able to
  119. access a floppy drive from the DOS prompt while DualStor is running.
  120.  
  121. ----------
  122. *Accessing Windows Setup*
  123.  
  124. If you are running DualStor and want to access Windows Setup, you must
  125. first exit DualStor. Otherwise, your system may hang when you attempt
  126. to exit DualStor after finishing with Windows Setup.
  127.  
  128. ----------
  129. *Setting the TZ Environment Variable
  130.  
  131. The TZ environment variable is not compatible with either DualStor for DOS
  132. or Windows.  Having the line 'SET TZ=' in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will cause
  133. the time based functions in DualStor to be inaccurate (ex. elapsed time will
  134. be 00:00:00 and the transfer rate will be incorrect).  It is recommended that
  135. the TZ set variable be removed from AUTOEXEC.BAT before performing a
  136. backup or restore.
  137.  
  138. If you did create backup sets with TZ enabled you will need to 'SET TZ='
  139. again before you can recover your data with DualStor.
  140.

  142.   3 - DUALSTOR JOB (PARAMETER) FILES
  143. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  144.  
  145. *Using Parameter Files from PS2Tape and PMTape*
  146.  
  147. If you have parameter files created for PS2Tape or PMTape, they will
  148. work with DualStor by copying them into the DualStor directory.
  149. Parameter files are now called job files and can be created more
  150. easily using options in the DualStor Jobs menu. Be sure that your
  151. existing parameter files have names different from the five job files
  152. created during DualStor installation (FULL.TPF, DIFFR.TPF, INCR.TPF,
  153. REST.TPF, and TAPEINFO.TPF), so you don't overwrite any of them.
  154.  
  155. Because of enhancements to job file capabilities, some of the syntax
  156. for job file commands has changed.  Your existing parameter files will
  157. still run, but first you should review Appendix B in your User Manual
  158. for detailed information on the new job file command syntax.
  159.  
  160. ----------
  161. *Logging a DualStor Operation*
  162.  
  163. All DualStor operations, including operations launched from job files,
  164. are logged in a DualStor Session Log. If you want to create a log file
  165. in a specific location with a specific name, open the job file using a
  166. text editor and add the following command:
  167.  
  168.     /l log_name
  169.  
  170. The /l command is a job file "option" available in backup and restore
  171. modes. The log file will be saved in your DualStor directory or you
  172. can specify a full path. For example:
  173.  
  174.     /l c:\bulogs\backup.log
  175.  
  176. The log file will list files that were included and/or excluded from
  177. the operation depending on the logging settings specified in DualStor.
  178. DualStor creates the log file after you exit the program. See Appendix
  179. B in the DualStor User Manual for more information on job file
  180. editing.
  181.  
  182. ----------
  183. *Mode Variables*
  184.  
  185. There is only one mode variable allowed in each Job file (i.e. *.tpf)
  186. Mode variables are !backup, !restore, !init, !util, and !shortcuts.
  187.  
  188. ----------
  189. *Encryption and Password Options*
  190.  
  191. The Encryption and Password options are not available for use with
  192. Job files.  Therefore, if you check the Encryption option in your
  193. Settings pull-down, Backup defaults window it will not be enabled
  194. (it will be grayed out) when you save a Job file.
  195.  
  196. ----------
  197. *Date Specification*
  198.  
  199. When using the '/d' option in a DualStor Job file you must have a
  200. space on both sides of the date_spec value.

  206. *Novell Volume Restrictions*
  207.  
  208. Novell volume restrictions will only be backed up if you use QIC tapes
  209. with the DualStor file system or you use Servo (AccuTrak) tapes.
  210. Volume restrictions are not backed up using QIC tapes with the
  211. QIC-Compatible file system (QIC-80 and QIC-113).  See your DualStor
  212. User's Guide for more information on file systems.
  213.  
  214. ----------
  215. *DualStor and LANtastic Security Files*
  216.  
  217. To perform a full backup or restore of LANtastic security files:
  218.  
  219. 1.  Connect your tape drive directly to the LANtastic file server.
  220.  
  221. 2.  Make sure DualStor for Windows is installed on the server.
  222.  
  223. 3.  In DOS, go to your Lantastic install directory (the default is
  224.     C:\LANTASTI) and type SERVER/REMOVE.
  225.  
  226.     This will disconnect all workstations from the server so that
  227.     files are not open on the network during backup or restore
  228.     (DualStor does not back up or restore open files).
  229.  
  230. 4.  Perform a backup or restore in DualStor as you normally do.
  231.  
  232. This procedure is only necessary when you back up or restore LANtastic
  233. security files. Otherwise, you can use normal procedures recommended
  234. in the DualStor User Manual, such as connecting your tape drive to a
  235. network workstation.
  236.  
  237. ----------
  238. *IBM Models 8580 and 8590 and LANtastic*
  239.  
  240. If you are using an IBM model 8580 or 8590 with LANtastic, you need to
  241. contact Artisoft technical support 602-293-6363 for information on
  242. removing a server without causing a general failure error.
  243.  
  244. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  245.   5 - COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
  246. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  247.  
  248. *Intel Premiere II PCI Motherboard*
  249.  
  250. If you have a Pentium system with the Intel P90 motherboard
  251. (Premiere II PCI, codename Plato) and you are experiencing
  252. slow transfer rates, 'DMA Overruns', or excessive shoe-shining
  253. (tape spins backward and forward continuously) when performing
  254. DualStor backup operations, you should first call the Intel Bulletin
  255. Board at 916-356-3600 and search on 'BIOS' for information that
  256. could resolve these problems.
  257.  
  258. ----------
  259. *Removing Other Software Device Drivers*
  260.  
  261. If you were using another tape backup software product previous
  262. to DualStor for Windows you should remove any of its device driver
  263. entries from your SYSTEM.INI before trying to execute DualStor
  264. for Windows.
  265.  
  266. ----------
  267. *DMA Channel 2*
  268.  
  269. Prior to executing DualStor for Windows make sure you have no
  270. entries in your SYSTEM.INI that are using DMA Channel 2.
  271.  
  272. ----------
  273. *National Semiconductor Floppy Controller DP8473*
  274.  
  275. If the DualStor for Windows software detects this floppy
  276. controller on your system, the DualStor software will
  277. use a maximum transfer rate of 500Kbps (vs. 1Mbps).
  278. This is due to this floppy controller not containing a
  279. FIFO.
  280.  
  281. ----------
  282. *Compatibility with QICstream*
  283.  
  284. QICstream backup software cannot read DualStor backup sets that are
  285. compressed.
  286.  
  287. ----------
  288. *Compatibility with Colorado Memory System Backup Software*
  289.  
  290. CMS's Colorado Backup software cannot read DualStor backup sets that
  291. are compressed.
  292.  
  293. ----------
  294. *IBM Model 9577 and 4100MC Card*
  295.  
  296. The 4100MC controller card in an IBM Model 9577 will cause DualStor
  297. to work improperly. To avoid this problem, connect your tape drive to
  298. your computer's floppy controller rather than the 4100MC card. See
  299. your tape drive's installation guide for more information.
  300.  
  301. ----------
  302. *SCSI Hard Drives and the Adaptec 1540 Controller*
  303.  
  304. If you are using:
  305.  
  306.         * a tape drive with a floppy controller AND
  307.         * a SCSI hard drive with an Adaptec 1540 controller,
  308.  
  309. you must set the IROPT environment variable. To set IROPT, enter the
  310. following command at the DOS prompt before you start DualStor:
  311.  
  312.                 SET IROPT=Y
  313.  
  314. Note that the Y must be in upper case. You may include this command as
  315. part of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  316.  
  317. ----------
  318. *DualStor and Migrating Windows Applications to OS/2*
  319.  
  320. If you have DualStor for Windows installed on your system and
  321. you install OS/2, do not migrate the DualStor for Windows to the OS/2
  322. Desktop.  DualStor for Windows will not work properly in the Win-OS/2
  323. session.  If you did migrate DualStor for Windows to the OS/2 Desktop,
  324. you should delete the DualStor for Windows folder.

  327.   6 - DUALSTOR 2.0 CHANGES FROM VERSIONS 1.x
  328. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  329.  
  330. *Default Backup Set Names*
  331.  
  332. If you mark specific directories and/or files for backup as opposed to
  333. marking an entire hard drive, the default backup set name will be
  334. "Partial-X" where 'X' is the drive designator of the hard drive on
  335. which the directories and/or files marked for backup reside.  DualStor
  336. versions 1.x used a default backup set name of "Full-X".
  337.  
  338. ----------
  339. *Column Headers*
  340.  
  341. Column headers were added to the tops of the file windows.  These
  342. column headers identify the column by name (ex. "Name", "Date",
  343. etc.).  The columns can be sized by dragging the separator line
  344. between each column (the separator line to the left of "Name"
  345. is not enabled).  Click the left mouse button on any column to sort
  346. the entire list by that column.
  347.  
  348. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  349.   7 - MISCELLANEOUS
  350. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  351.  
  352. *Verify after Backup*
  353.  
  354. It is a good practice to check the 'Verify after Backup' option on when
  355. selecting your Backup Parameters.  This will cause DualStor to
  356. perform a byte-by-byte comparison between the data backed up on
  357. the tape and the data on the hard drive increasing your confidence
  358. in the backup.  It may, however, double the time of your backup.
  359. If you want to set this option on permanently for all of your backups,
  360. simply select the Settings pull-down, Backup..., and check the
  361. 'Verify after Backup'.
  362.  
  363. ----------
  364. *Passwords*
  365.  
  366. If you are using the QIC file system with the Password option, only 8
  367. characters are significant even though DualStor will accept 15
  368. characters.  All 15 characters are significant when using the DualStor
  369. file system.
  370.  
  371. ----------
  372. *Hardware Compression*
  373.  
  374. The DualStor User's Guide shows a Hardware Compression radio button
  375. on the Backup Set Parameters windows but you will not see it in the
  376. application itself as DualStor does not support any tape drives that
  377. support Hardware compression.
